Planting Justice

When Planting Justice met Sallie and Esther, we were trying to find a home for the largest and most diverse collection of certified organic tree crops in North America. Planting Justice had just acquired Rolling River Nursery, including their vast collection of 1100 varieties of fruit and nut trees, and we sought to ensure that the knowledge of how to propagate and preserve this heritage collection would be shared widely and conserved for future generations, while contributing to the movement for food sovereignty and economic justice. Their support has enabled Planting Justice to purchase a 2 acre empty lot in deep east Oakland, as the long term home for the tens of thousands of young soil-building and life-giving trees, and create living-wage jobs for formerly incarcerated people and others facing intense social and economic disenfranchisement, as a national model for holistic re-entry and economic development without displacement.
